The route to net zero healthcare: Climate change commitments of leading pharmaceutical companies and their implications for the supply chain
9:20 AM - 10:00 AM
Healthcare systems contribute to approximately 5% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with up to 55% of this attributable to the pharmaceutical industry and its supply chain. As healthcare systems globally are making commitments to net zero, input from the entire pharmaceutical supply chain, including medical communications agencies, will be required to reach these targets.
This session will begin with an overview of the impact of healthcare systems, specifically the pharmaceutical industry, on GHG emissions and climate change. It will then cover findings from research on the emission targets and strategies of leading pharmaceutical companies, and their implications for pharmaceutical suppliers. Pharmaceutical companies that have committed to net zero, carbon neutrality, and emission reduction, will be identified, and their plans to reach these targets will be discussed. These plans include engaging with suppliers to set emission reduction targets, including environmental sustainability in vendor selection criteria, and specific projects such as assisting suppliers to purchase renewable energy. Findings on progress towards company targets will also be presented, giving an indication of the success of the work being done in this area.
